"Cultural pageantry reintroduced me to qipaos (traditional Chinese dress) and how beautiful they made me feel. How empowering it was to feel connected to my culture! As if I, an Asian American, was worthy of wearing something so honorable. What makes me worthy isn’t simply where I come from but rather who I choose to be and with this particular project, it was choosing to be unapologetic and redefine these beauty standards and expectations of me as an AAPI individual. Who knew strutting in a qipao to Jay Chou is what makes me feel empowered !!" - Celina
